Lethbridge-Stewart and his adjutant prepared for their midnight reconnoitre of the Laird’s house. Outside the winds had died down, but the icy rain kept up its assault. Lethbridge-Stewart had worked in worse weather and been under much greater threat. Even if they confirmed a connection between Sally’s disappearance, the UFO, and the women, the threat could be contained easily by him and Bishop.

They clambered into the Land Rover. Bishop drove. He parked up in a small copse of pine trees nestled in a small vale half a mile away from where the drive to the Laird’s manor branched out. Lethbridge-Stewart took a punt on where they might be able to cut through to a fence, then through the Laird’s land to the house from the back. He cursed the rain and ice bucketing down from the heavens, and glanced up at the tops of the trees as the gale flung them about.
